If you experienced your hair turning white when you found a snake in your chicken coop these tips will help you to snake-proof your chicken coop. No matter how venomous the snake is, it’s never a pleasure to see it in close, even though they sometimes can even help you with vermin.
Sometimes you can have snake visiting the coop without you seeing it at all.
However, these sneaky slithering creatures still leave some signs that they were here. The first sign is that there are missing eggs, which means a snake might be feasting on them.
Still, you can’t be 100% sure until you start finding regurgitated eggshells or snake skins around the coop.
Screen the Coop and Check for Gaps
To protect your chickens, you should first make sure that there are no holes for snakes to enter. Screen the windows with thick hardware cloth, which will help you with other pests too. Check for door gaps or gaps under the walls. Any opening bigger than a ¼ inch is a potential threat. It’s also a good idea to install a coop apron if you don’ have a solid floor.
Maintain the Coop Area
Keeping your garden clean, trimmed and neat will leave them without a convenient place to find cover or shelter. Remove or tidy up any pile that you might have near the coop. It’s not only a good way to snake-proof but also to vermin-proof your coop.
Get Rid of Rodents
If there are snakes, there might be vermin that attracts them too. Set up traps or call a professional to handle this problem for you. Also, consider investing in rodent-proof food containers and feeders for your chicken.
You can make a humane trap for snake quite easily and get it away from your coop and your home. There are also readymade versions that you can find for cheap online. The snake enters the trap to get the food but it can’t escape and you can also take it somewhere else safely.
There are also many other DIY methods out there, but these steps were more than enough for me to get rid of those nasty creatures. I hope that you will have luck getting snakes away from your chicken coop too.
