Some people are more afraid of snakes and some a bit less, but no one wants to get bit by one. Whether you hate or admire these creatures, they can kill you if you accidentally stumble upon them while enjoying a hike. I want to show you what snake proof materials can protect you from snakebites and keep their fangs away from your skin.
There’s little chance that snake can bite through quality leather or rubber, so wearing high leather or rubber boots can help a lot. You can find a lot of great snake proof boots made of these materials.
Heavy denim or canvas
When going through snake infested area, you should wear trousers made of heavy and comfortable material. More importantly, the leggings must not be tight but should hang loosely around the leg and the boots. This way the snake will bite the fabric and hopefully miss your leg.
Strong nylon materials like Cordura are great for snake proof gaiters. Gaiters like this are both comfortable and safe and you can easily find them online.
Some gaiters can even be made out of plastic. This will give you extra protection, but it could reduce your flexibility and comfort while hiking.
Bulletproof material like this should have no problems protecting you from snakebites either. More so, they are also very comfortable and can protect you from brush and briar too.
It’s worth repeating that the snake will almost always try to run away from you if it can. Make a lot of noise so it can feel the vibrations and move away. Try not to trap it, because then the snake will be forced to attack you. But most attacks happen because people don’t see a snake, so wearing snake proof materials can be a lifesaver.
