These are one of the top-rated snake tongs on the market at the moment and are popular among handlers, pet owners, and herpers. Available in 7 different sizes from 24″ to 72″, we used 42″ tongs, which is a good length to stay at a safe distance from the most snakes.
The tube is sturdy and made out of aluminum alloy which helps to keep it lightweight. This is particularly useful if you need to carry the tongs around with you, e.g. when herping.
One of the best parts of these tongs is that the wire for the gripping mechanism is actually inside the aluminum tube, preventing you from snagging it on bushes. Many repairs on snake tongs are done simply because the wiring is external, rather than internal, and gets caught easily.
The ‘teeth’ on the jaw of the tongs are blunt so that they don’t harm the snake in any way yet provide good grip. The jaws are also wide enough not to cause any issues with hurting the snake.
This Tomahawk Live Trap Ton Jones is 60 inches (available in 30″-72″) Deluxe Snake Tong consists of a 22-degree bend at the jaw end of the super tube. It keeps the head flat on the ground while handling snakes and reptiles, which saves you from bending over.
These snake tongs are made from sturdy aluminum with a thick .090 super tube, one-hand pistol grip, concealed stainless steel aircraft-quality cable, and concealed stainless steel jaw spring.
The pistol-shaped handle is comfortable and you will notice that the spring is smooth when you are gripping and releasing. Furthermore, the contoured grip means that it shouldn’t slip out of sweaty or wet hands easily.
This model is designed for large snakes. The closure mechanism is spring loaded. Serrated jaws are certainly becoming more popular in the tong world and that’s exactly what this product sports.
The ‘teeth’, or serrated jaws, are designed to be smooth and not inflict any pain upon the snake while allowing you to move the snake with good grip.
These tongs are built with strength and durability in mind. Made for the outdoors, they are constructed with aircraft-quality cast aluminum. The pole is made from anodized aluminum.
These materials ensure that the tongs don’t bend or break even with a heavy snake. The jaws are coated in red for increased visibility. This coating is softer to prevent injury to the snake and slippage.
The tongs have a pistol grip that’s comfortable to use and enhance control while lifting and moving the snake. Tomahawk standard snake tongs are very durable and made to last.
Pole is made from durable aluminum with a thick .090 tube and hides stainless steel aircraft-quality cable and concealed stainless steel jaw spring.
22-degree bend of the head keeps it flat to the surface, which makes it easier to grab the snake. They are available in 6 different sizes. Shortest one is 30″ long and the longest one is 72″.
This versatile snake-handling tongs with the unique gripping jaw are made out of durable cast nylon jaw and anodized aluminum 0.045 wall tube. That makes them lightweight, which is always welcomed, especially when you need to handle snakes daily.
Tong jaws and pistol grip are made out of super strong nylon, which makes sure that they are pleasant to hold and to make sure you don’t harm reptiles.
They are great for small-to-medium-sized snakes and available in a variety of lengths (24″-72″). The price point is also lower than the rest of tongs in this article, so they are a good budget choice.
They might not be as strong as other Tomahawk models, they are still strong enough for residential or commercial use. Regardless if you’re a herpetologist, wildlife removal company, exterminator or just snake enthusiast, they are still a good choice.
How to choose a snake tongs
Now, I will explain how can you choose the best snake tong for your pet snake or just want to remove them from your property. One of the best ways to use snake tongs is alongside a snake hook. The longer the tong and hook, the less control you’ll have over it but you’ll be further away from striking distance.
Shorter and you’ll be up close and personal, probably too close for comfort. I’d recommend opting for something in between, around 40 inches for both the snake tong and hook.
That way, you’ll still have enough control over it while remaining a safe distance from the snake. Long tongs are useful if the snake is under a bush or building.
You should choose a tong with a wide jaw grip because it puts less pressure on the snake and will cause it the least amount of pain. As I have said before that a snake in pain is more deadly and dangerous to handle.
Protection from snake bites
Tomahawk snake tongs available online and at most better-stocked pet shops. If you deal with snakes regularly, then you must also think about buying other protective measures as well.
I would suggest you use snake proof gloves, gaiters as well as snake bite protection boots. Snake proof hiking pants can be very useful for hikers and hunters as they can keep their legs safe from poisonous snakes when you’re out in nature.
While we can’t 100% protect ourselves against venomous snakes, using protective gear will protect us in most situations. I don’t know about you, but I would rather be 90% protected than not protected at all.
Most of the snake proof gear is available at reasonable prices and you really shouldn’t save money when trying to protect your life.
My final thoughts
As we have mentioned above, it is a skill to learn how to handle snakes. In the learning process, you have to take care of the snake as well as yourself. So, using a snake tong can be helpful for both.
Tomahawk deluxe snake tongs are my favorite for several reasons, but that doesn’t mean they’ll be your favorite too. So I suggest you check all of their models on Amazon and make your own choice. Be safe.
